SIRIMON – NAROMORU TRAVERSE- 4 DAYS/ 3 NIGHTS
Sirimon to Naro Moru is the most common traverse on Mt. Kenya. The trip offers reasonably good chances of reaching the summit.
Day 1: NAIROBI (1,650m) – OLDMOSES CAMP (3,340m.)
Depart Nairobi with your guide at 8am to drive to Nanyuki (the base town for climbing Mount Kenya). The drive takes 3hrs and on arrival have lunch. After lunch be transferred to Sirimon Park gate. From here, hike through montane forest, bamboo and rosewood up to the Old Moses Hut, gaining an elevation range of 700m in 3-4 hours.
Dinner and Overnight at Old Moses Hut (3300m)
Day 2: OLDMOSES CAMP (3,340m.) – SHIPTON’S CAMP (4,236m.)
After an early breakfast we commence a 7-8 hours trek to Shipton’s camp (4,236m). Today’s trek is long and interesting but also a good test on individual fitness. You’ll ascent close to 900m going up the surreal Mackinder Valley with its strange vegetation of giant lobelia and groundsel, unique to equatorial African mountains. Here we stay at Shipton’s hut (4236m), just below the glaciers and jagged peaks of bare rock that surround the main summits
Day 3: SUMMIT PT. LENANA (4,985m.) – MACKINDER’S CAMP (4,300m
Predawn start (3am) for the summit attempt. Up steep screes and a bare rocky track to reach the hikers summit, Pt Lenana in time for sunrise – Kilimanjaro is usually visible 340kms to the south. The climb is on frozen scree going through the Harris tarn and requiring some scrambling on final stretch to reach the summit. This is unavoidable on any route but we aim to reach the summit and witness the magical sunrise over the equator at 6.30am. Descent via Naromoru route on the opposite end of the peaks to reach Mackinder’s camp for breakfast. We feel tired but absolutely ecstatic.
Day 4: MACKINDER’S CAMP – NAIROBI (1965m
Descent on a trodden trail past the famed vertical bog to Met Station in approximately 4 hours then farther on a broad track through bamboo and virgin rain forest to meet vehicles at the park gate for your return journey to Mountain Rock Lodge for a hot shower and lunch before proceeding with your onward plans. Those Returning to Nairobi today should expect to arrive by early evening.
